What you'll study

The specialization blends shared doctoral seminars and individualized study. Humane Education connects human rights, environmental preservation, animal protection and culture; topics explicitly referenced include environmental ethics, animal protection, human rights, culture and change, arts and social change, food systems, and solutionary education in the classroom. Students may take seminars with Institute for Humane Education faculty (virtually and in Maine), choose courses from other Antioch programs, and transfer applicable graduate credits. Each student’s dissertation topic aligns with their Humane Education focus.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a minimum of five years' professional experience. The President's Doctoral Fellowship requires a minimum prior GPA of 3.40 for eligibility. Coursework transfer from prior graduate work is permitted subject to program policies.

Graduates join the cohort of scholar-practitioners able to design and evaluate educational interventions for social change. Scholarships & funding angle (general)

The President’s Doctoral Fellowship provides a $12,000 award to entering doctoral students who meet the minimum 3.40 GPA and experience criteria; awards are paid equally over the first two registered years. Recipients must remain enrolled full time, complete each registered course, and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress each term. Students may also explore credit transfer and cross-enrollment options within Antioch University as part of planning finances and course load.
