Fresno Pacific University’s Master of Divinity is a practice-focused seminary degree designed for those preparing for pastoral and ministry leadership in churches, para-church organizations or faith-based nonprofits. The program mixes classroom instruction with supervised field practicum and options for contextual learning, and is oriented toward ministry in the Central Valley and similar settings.

What you'll study

Coursework emphasizes biblical knowledge, theological reflection, community formation and practical leadership skills. Students study foundational courses alongside peers from Marriage and Family Therapy and other ministry tracks in some classes. Under supervision, students participate in the practices of ministry for four semesters. Electives allow for specialization; students may add a 3-unit Presbyterian certificate if seeking Presbyterian ordination. The program offers occasional contextual learning experiences such as a study trip to Israel, a Hispanic Summer Program, and guest-mentor teaching from practitioners. Online course options and diverse practicum placements are available.

Entry requirements

  • Completed application for admission.
  • Official transcripts showing a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (current transcripts acceptable if degree in progress; final transcript required before enrollment).
  • If cumulative undergraduate GPA is below 2.5 (4.0 scale), a letter of explanation is required.
  • Short answer questions submitted in the application portal; the file is not reviewed until these are complete.
  • Two reference forms: one spiritual reference from a pastor or ministry leader (not a family member) and one academic reference.
  • A writing sample of three or more pages of original work.
  • A program interview scheduled after submission of materials.
  • International applicants must provide additional documentation including TOEFL (550 PBT or 79 iBT) or IELTS 6.5, passport and visa information, and a statement of financial support.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for a range of ministry vocations: congregational pastoral leadership, family and youth ministries, pastoral care and counseling, chaplaincy, church planting, Bible teaching, community development, and cross-cultural ministries. The M.Div. is also the usual prerequisite for doctoral ministry study (Doctor of Ministry) and for board certification as a chaplain.

Scholarships & funding angle

Prospective students may also inquire about program-specific grants, seminary scholarships, and work- or ministry-based support that often accompany theological training.
