Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Fellowship types and typical values:

• Regular PhD fellowship: currently 9,000 NIS per month for full‑time PhD students, paid for up to 4.5 years (the fellowship entitlement described is for 4.5 years; payment may be extended to a maximum of 60 months in exceptional approved cases).
• Medical Doctors and Veterinarians (MD/DVM): entitled to a monthly fellowship at the postdoctoral level, currently 11,500 NIS per month.
• Incentive fellowship: an added supplement for recipients of certain competitive external fellowships whose value in NIS is below the incentive level; currently 10,800 NIS per month.
• External (competitive) fellowships paid through WIS: accepted up to a limit of 130% of the regular WIS fellowship, subject to institute rules.

Principles governing payments:

• External fellowships may substitute for the regular WIS fellowship rather than being paid in addition.
• WIS and external fellowships are not paid simultaneously. If an external fellowship exceeds the regular WIS fellowship, the student may retain the balance up to stated limits; if it is lower, the institute will pay the difference up to specified percentages.

Travel allowance: All PhD students are entitled to a travel allowance of $4,250 (paid in NIS in two instalments). If a student's external fellowship includes a travel allowance higher than the WSoS amount, the institute will not provide the WSoS allowance; if the external allowance is lower, the institute will top up the balance.

Termination and extensions: Fellowship payments cease when the degree is officially approved, if the student is no longer at the institute, upon thesis submission followed by certain post‑submission time limits, or after the maximum payment period. Students may receive fellowship support for a maximum of 60 months; requests to extend financial support beyond the standard 54 months (or for leave such as maternity, reserve duty or prolonged illness) are decided individually by the Dean of the Weizmann School of Science.
