What you'll study

Students complete formal graduate coursework and seminar requirements, engage in dissertation research, and present their work at scientific meetings. The program provides a degree plan and course rotation to guide study; specific course selections and research topics are aligned with faculty expertise.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in biology or an equivalent preparation demonstrating readiness for advanced study and research in molecular biology. Competitive applicants will show strong performance in cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics and chemistry. Preference is given to candidates with a GPA of at least 3.2 in the last 60 credit hours, evidence of hands‑on research experience, and research interests compatible with program faculty.

• Submit CV/resume and a 1–3 page statement of purpose describing background, reasons for graduate study, and alignment with program faculty.
• Provide three academic references (referees submit letters via the application system).
• Participate in an interview (videoconference or phone) if invited.
• GRE is not currently required.
• Official transcripts required from all institutions attended; international applicants must submit an evaluation by a NACES or AICE member service.
• Pay the application fee ($50 domestic, $75 international) unless eligible for a listed waiver; follow the online application process and submit all supplemental documents.

Outcomes typically follow research-focused paths in academic, government or industry laboratories; students gain skills to lead independent projects and communicate results to the scientific community.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Admitted PhD students are offered Graduate Assistant (GA) positions; no separate GA application is required. TWU currently does not provide tuition waivers. Graduate assistants are considered full‑time when enrolled in at least 5 credit hours per semester and qualify for in‑state tuition rates. Although students are responsible for tuition, many offset costs through GA appointments and external scholarships.
