Programme overview

This Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design is a one-year, full-time course delivered at Wakefield College in partnership with Screen Yorkshire and awarded by UAL. It is designed to give students practical and contextual grounding across art, design, craft and media, with local gallery and museum visits and a culturally enriching residential visit to support art appreciation and inform personal work.

What you'll study

The course is organised around three core units that take you from broad exploration to a final major project:

• Unit 1 - Diagnostic Investigation into Creative Practice: studio and workshop projects to experiment with visual language and a wide range of creative disciplines; development of research, idea development and reflective practice through learning journals and online blogs.
• Unit 2 - Developing Specialist Practice: identify and focus on a chosen specialist area, developing a high-quality portfolio suitable for higher education interview and future employment; encourages a holistic approach that contextualises your practice.
• Unit 3 - Consolidating Practice: plan and realise a final major project demonstrating individuality and independence; project is exhibited in the annual public Art & Design exhibition.

Entry requirements

Entry to the programme is by interview. The course starts in September and is Level 3, delivered full-time over one year.

Career prospects

The diploma prepares students for progression to higher education art and design courses or for entry-level roles in creative industries. Outcomes include having a specialist-focused portfolio for university interview and practical experience across disciplines such as textiles, fashion, 3D and digital work.
