The Access programme focuses on subject knowledge and the study skills required for successful degree study. Wakefield College offers multiple pathways so content varies by pathway; available routes include:

• Access to Higher Education - Creative Arts Pathway
• Access to Higher Education - Creative Industries Pathway
• Access to Higher Education - Healthcare Professions Pathway
• Access to Higher Education - Humanities and Social Sciences Pathway (Blended)

Across pathways students gain academic skills such as essay writing, research project design and other study skills that prepare them for university modules in their chosen field.

Entry requirements

The courses are intended for learners aged 19 and over. The college assesses applicants individually to place students at an appropriate level. Before starting, students must enrol at the college campus where their course will be delivered.

Career prospects

The primary progression route is entry to undergraduate degree programmes. Nationally, over 40,000 Access to HE students complete their course each year and move on to university-level study. Wakefield College reports that 100% of its Access students receive university offers and around 90% progress into university in the following year.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

All Wakefield College Access to HE courses are either free or can be financed via the UK Government’s Advanced Learner Loan; there are no up-front fees in either case. Advanced Learner Loans are available to learners aged 19+, and if a learner later completes a degree the loan cost is written off. The college also signposts additional financial support options and guidance on learner loans.
