The programme requires a 12-hour computer science foundation and an additional 12-hour emphasis selected from four tracks, plus 6 hours of electives at the 5000 level not already taken.

• Cyber Security Emphasis (12 hours): CMSC-5653 Cloud Architecture and Security; CMSC-5663 Network Forensics; CMSC-5673 Computer Systems Risk Management; CMSC-5683 Offensive Security and Penetration Testing.
• Data Science Emphasis (12 hours): CMSC-5353 Big Data Management; CMSC-5363 Data Science Project I; CMSC-5373 Data Science Project II; CMSC-5723 Machine Learning. (Note: the programme is not currently accepting applications for the Data Science track.)

• Electives (6 hours): Choose 6 hours of 5000-level CMSC courses not already taken.

Entry requirements

Admission is intended for applicants with an accredited undergraduate degree in computer science. Candidates with closely related degrees (for example mathematics or engineering) may be considered with an appropriate plan of study. A successful applicant should already have experience in procedural and object-oriented programming (examples listed in the catalogue include Ada, C, C++, Java, Pascal, Smalltalk), plus background in computer architecture or assembly language, data structures, operating systems, software engineering and databases, and relevant mathematics such as mathematical logic, discrete mathematics, and calculus. Applicants missing these foundations may be admitted with specified deficiencies and required to take remedial courses.

Career prospects

The curriculum targets preparation for careers and vocations in computer science, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence. Graduates gain knowledge and applied skills in programming languages, algorithms, data structures, systems, databases and internet technologies, plus software engineering and team-based development skills useful for industry, research, or further study.
