What you'll study

Coursework is delivered in accelerated eight-week terms. Campbell Online provides the first nine courses (27 credit hours) entirely online; the remaining 7 credit hours are completed as in-person internship experiences in a school setting. The program is organized as nine three-credit courses plus seven one-credit internship modules. Topics and competencies emphasized include:

• Leadership and problem-solving—administrative practice and data-driven decision making
• Management and supervision—resource management and organizational culture
• School law and finance
• Curriculum, instruction and assessment
• School safety and special education
• Educational technology, research, and student growth and development
• Collaborative leadership and professional ethics

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a clear teaching license, have at least four years of experience as a teacher or in a related field, and be current residents of North Carolina. Admission requires a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher, completion of the application process, and two references (one should be from the candidate’s principal or supervisor). No GRE or other standardized test is required for full admission. Up to 6 prior graduate credits may be transferred in if relevant.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for school leadership roles such as principal or assistant principal, superintendent or assistant superintendent, and administrative positions in county or state central offices. Licensing requirements vary by state; for North Carolina licensure, the program supports candidates through the portfolio process with the NC Department of Public Instruction.
