What you'll study

The degree offers two distinct options with different credit structures. The Counseling option is built on a core plus additional coursework and is designed to meet requirements for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). The Marriage and Family Therapy option is designed to meet requirements for licensure as a Licensed Marital and Family Therapist (LMFT).

• Counseling option: there is a core (stated as a 21-credit-hour core in program materials) plus an additional 36 credit hours of coursework for the Counseling track.
• Marriage and Family Therapy option: program materials reference a 24-credit-hour core with an additional 24 credit hours of coursework for the Marriage and Family Therapy track.

Entry requirements

Applicants must apply and be admitted to graduate studies at Cameron University and hold a GPA of 3.0 or above.

Career prospects

The program prepares graduates for clinical roles in mental health settings with curricular alignment to state licensure pathways: the Counseling option for those pursuing LPC licensure and the Marriage and Family Therapy option for those pursuing LMFT licensure. Graduates typically pursue roles in counseling agencies, community mental health centers, private practice (post-licensure), and related clinical environments, subject to meeting any additional supervised-practice or state licensure requirements.
