What you'll study

Coursework combines applied lessons, ensemble participation, advanced theory and musicology with concentration-specific topics.

• Music Composition: advanced theory, private composition lessons, music literature, music leadership in nonprofits and a final recital of original works; emphasis on developing and recording a portfolio for solo, chamber and large ensemble settings (120 credit hours).
• Music Performance: applied lessons, chamber and conducted ensemble experience, music literature, studio teaching techniques, theory and musicology and a final recital; strong focus on solo and ensemble performance (120 credit hours).
• Music Industry: industry coursework, recording and film scoring, business electives, music leadership in nonprofits, cooperative projects and an internship; includes business, publishing and marketing elements as well as management, recording and broadcasting skills (120 credit hours).
• Music Education: applied study, ensembles, pedagogy, theory, musicology, technology, assessment and behavior modification; prepares candidates for initial teacher licensure in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and may include student teaching abroad or other focused study (131 credit hours).

Entry requirements

Applicants should review EKU admissions requirements before applying. Transfer students may bring in up to 90 credit hours from accredited institutions, but a minimum of 30 credit hours for the degree must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.
