What you'll study

The program teaches the core concepts and hands-on skills required for injury prevention, assessment and acute care of athletes. Students are introduced to material in the classroom, practice skills in lab and clinical settings, then demonstrate proficiency under preceptor evaluation. From the first semester, students engage in field experiences and clinical hours that include hospital rotations in orthopedics, sports medicine, emergency department care and surgical observation, as well as experiences in physical therapy and other clinical sites.

Entry requirements

Applicants must apply to the Emporia State University Graduate School and formally apply to the athletic training program for admission. Successful completion of the program's requirements is required to become eligible to sit for the national certification exam. The program operates within ESU's School of Applied Health Sciences and follows the program-specific application process.

Graduates are prepared to work as athletic trainers across diverse environments, including universities, schools, professional sports organizations, clinics, hospitals, fitness centers, performing arts ensembles and the military.
