Programme overview

Harding University’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 33-hour graduate program delivered 100% online with individualized degree plans. It offers two routes: a provisional licensure track that allows candidates to teach as the teacher of record while completing coursework, and a traditional licensure track centered on student teaching field experience. The program is recognized and approved by the Arkansas Department of Education; graduates who meet state requirements are eligible for an Arkansas educator license, which is subject to interstate reciprocity agreements.

What you'll study

The curriculum totals 33 hours and includes six hours of internship (supervised teaching). Coursework focuses on pedagogical theory, curriculum development, instructional strategies and supervised classroom practice. Preparation programs are available for special education K–12 and an integrated early childhood/special education pathway (B–K). Candidates can pursue licensure pathways in:

Entry requirements

Applicants must submit an online application and have official transcripts sent to admissions. Additional required items include three professional or academic recommendations, official Praxis Subject Assessment scores sent to Harding, a background check, completion of a MAT Fundamentals course, and a GRIT Scale survey. Candidates must provide documentation of Science of Reading Awareness (Phase I) in the Prescribed Pathway Credentials before program completion; if not held at admission, it must be completed prior to finishing the program. Admission also requires a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.7 (or 2.9 on the last 60 hours) and a passing Praxis Subject Assessment score prior to or during the first semester.

Graduates are prepared to serve as licensed classroom teachers at multiple grade levels and in special education settings. The MAT emphasizes practical classroom-ready skills and supervised teaching experience to ready candidates for Arkansas educator licensure and employment in K–12 schools.
