See the degree grade →An 18-credit online graduate certificate designed to strengthen advanced mathematical modeling and quantitative skills in core physics domains. Suited for credentialed P–12 physics teachers or professionals aiming to teach physics at the college level or expand subject-matter expertise while continuing work or family commitments.
Coursework focuses on advancing mathematical and quantitative approaches used across foundational physics areas. Topics explicitly listed in the program description include mathematical models for physics, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics and modern physics. Students work on career-focused projects that model real-world situations and develop communication and critical-thinking skills for explaining scientific concepts.
Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and CHEA, verified by official transcripts sent directly to IWU. Candidates should either have a Physics major at the bachelor level or be state-certified to teach Physics at the secondary (P–12) level. An undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher from the baccalaureate institution (with at least 30 hours completed there) is required. One graduate-level physics course (equivalent to PHYS-501) may be transferred in with a minimum grade of B-.
Graduates are positioned for roles such as adjunct or community college physics instructor, P–12 physics teacher delivering dual-enrollment courses, education service agency specialist, or technical positions in various industries where strengthened physics and quantitative skills are valued.
