What you'll study

All BFA students take the Theatre Core, which exposes them to main theatrical areas and play analysis across historical and analytical perspectives. Each track combines classroom coursework with practicum courses tied to actual productions. Available tracks and emphases include:

• Design & Technology: advanced stagecraft and design with emphases in Costume, Digital Media and Projection, Lighting, Scenic, or Sound.
• Directing: study of how theatrical disciplines combine; emphases include Artistic Direction and Management, Playwriting, or Communication — useful for directors, stage managers and artistic leaders.
• Performance: techniques for script analysis, character creation and collaborative acting practice.
• Playwrighting: workshop and writing courses plus related classes such as Backstage Experience, Script Analysis, and Theatre History.
• Musical Theatre: offered as a distinct track with its own page and requirements.

Entry requirements

The BFA Theatre program is select-admission: applicants must be admitted to Marietta College and separately accepted into the BFA through the department's application process. Prospective students should consult the Theatre Application Requirements for details.

Career prospects

The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for professional work in the entertainment industry. Depending on track, realistic roles include performers and musical theatre artists, designers and technical theatre personnel, directors, stage managers, playwrights, and artistic/administrative theatre positions. The program’s practicum, internship and capstone components emphasize practical, portfolio-building experience.
