This programme develops regional specialism alongside rigorous training in research methods. Core elements typically include advanced language study for the chosen region, region-specific history and cultural studies, comparative politics and political economy, and contemporary social and development issues. Students also take methods modules in qualitative and quantitative research, fieldwork design and area-specific archival or ethnographic techniques.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold a recognised bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as international relations, history, political science, economics, anthropology, languages or area studies. Typical supporting materials include academic transcripts, a statement of purpose outlining regional interest and research goals, two or three academic or professional references, and a writing sample or sample of previous research.

Where instruction or research requires a specific language, evidence of language proficiency is required; the university accepts recognised language test scores or documented coursework. Some applicants provide standardised test scores (GRE) where available, but many programmes accept them as optional—check the programme page for the current policy. Professional experience in the region, internships or prior fieldwork strengthen an application.
