What you'll study

The programme combines core training in comparative area studies methods with advanced study of one or more world regions (for example East Asia, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East or Africa). You will develop skills in regional languages, historical and cultural literature, and thematic approaches such as political economy, migration, security, and development.

• Core modules: research methods in area studies, theory of regionhood and comparative regionalism, and seminar-based approaches to interdisciplinary inquiry.
• Regional modules: in-depth courses focused on the politics, society, culture and economy of the chosen region(s). Modules typically analyse contemporary issues through historical and transnational perspectives.
• Language training: sustained study of a regional language or advanced language electives to support primary-source research and professional communication.
• Electives: options may include migration and diasporas, international development, media and cultural studies, conflict and security, and economic integration.
• Independent research: a supervised master’s dissertation or capstone project based on original research, which may include archival work, fieldwork or policy-oriented analysis.

Structure

The programme is taught through a mixture of seminars, lectures, language classes and independent research. Students typically take a set of core modules, choose regional and thematic electives, and complete a substantial research project under faculty supervision. Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to hold an undergraduate degree (or recognised equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as history, political science, international relations, anthropology, languages or area studies. Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a personal statement outlining regional interests and research goals, at least two academic or professional references, and a curriculum vitae.

Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency through an accepted English language qualification. Prior study of a relevant regional language is advantageous but not always required; conditional language training pathways may be available.
