What you'll study

The programme develops core professional knowledge, classroom skills and subject-specific teaching approaches. Typical modules cover: curriculum theory and design; learning, assessment and differentiation; behaviour management and inclusive practice; classroom planning and subject/phase-specific methodology (primary or secondary routes where available); and professional enquiry/research into practice.

• Professional Studies: legal and ethical responsibilities, child protection and professional standards for teachers.
• Curriculum and Assessment: designing lessons and units, formative and summative assessment, and implementing the Scottish curriculum framework where applicable.
• Inclusive Practice and Additional Support: strategies for meeting diverse learning needs and working with support services.
• Subject/Phase Methodology: methods and resources for teaching specific subjects (secondary) or the integrated primary curriculum.
• Professional Enquiry/Research: a sustained piece of critical enquiry into an aspect of classroom practice or school improvement.

Learning is a blend of seminars, workshops, micro-teaching, observations and extended school placements. Assessment typically involves portfolios, observed lessons, reflective assignments and the professional enquiry.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally require an undergraduate degree (honours degree typical) and evidence of relevant experience working with children or young people. Selection normally includes references, an interview and demonstration of literacy and numeracy proficiency. Successful candidates will be expected to satisfy statutory pre-placement checks such as a Disclosure/PVG check and occupational health clearance, and to meet any professional registration requirements for teaching in Scotland.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to pursue initial teacher roles in schools and to apply for registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) or the equivalent professional body where relevant. Career paths include classroom teaching at primary or secondary level, pastoral and curriculum leadership, additional support for learning roles, and further study such as a Master’s in Education or leadership qualifications.
