The MSW curriculum builds a foundation in social work values, ethics and core practice skills before advancing to specialised content and practicum learning. Core topics typically include human behaviour and the social environment, social welfare policy and advocacy, research methods for social work, diversity and cultural competence, and advanced clinical assessment and intervention. Students spend substantial time in supervised field placements where classroom learning is applied to direct practice, casework, community organising or administrative projects.

Depending on prior qualifications and programme options, students can follow a generalist-to-advanced sequence or enter through an advanced-standing pathway if they hold an accredited BSW. Elective and advanced courses commonly cover areas such as clinical practice with individuals and families, group work, trauma-informed care, substance misuse, integrated behavioural health, organisational leadership, programme evaluation and community practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Typical application materials include an academic transcript, a personal statement describing professional goals and relevant experience, a current résumé or CV, and professional or academic references. Applicants may be invited to interview. Candidates with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited programme may be eligible for advanced standing that reduces the number of required credit hours.

As part of admission and before practicum, students should be prepared to comply with background checks, health and immunisation requirements, and any site-specific clearances. While specific GPA thresholds, prerequisite coursework or test requirements vary, applicants are advised to consult the programme office for guidance on academic standards and preparation.
