What you'll study

The Bachelor’s in Music combines applied, ensemble and academic study to build musicianship, technical facility and contextual knowledge. Students take a mix of core and specialism courses including private applied lessons, chamber and large ensembles, aural skills and music theory, music history and literature, and courses in composition or arranging depending on pathway.

• Core musicianship: applied lessons, sight-singing and ear training, music theory sequence, large-ensemble and chamber performance.
• Historical and analytical study: music history and literature, form and analysis, world music or ethnomusicology options.
• Specialist pathways: performance (solo and ensemble, juries and recitals), composition, music education (pedagogy and practicum), jazz studies, and music technology/recording.
• Professional skills: conducting, arranging, rehearsal technique, entrepreneurship for musicians, and opportunities to work in recording studios or with music technology labs.
• Capstone: culmination in a senior recital, portfolio or research project depending on the chosen major and options.

Structure

The degree is delivered through a combination of weekly one-to-one lessons, ensemble rehearsals, classroom lectures and laboratory work. Students complete university liberal education requirements in addition to major requirements, and can often combine study with a minor or double major. Performance students normally present juries and a senior recital; composition and research-focused students complete a final project or thesis.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary-school qualification. Admission to the School of Music typically requires a successful audition or submission of a performance portfolio; composition applicants will submit scores and recordings; applicants for music education should be prepared to demonstrate both musical proficiency and interest in teaching. Transcripts, a personal statement and references are required. Some students may also take placement tests in theory or musicianship prior to registration.
