What you'll study

This programme introduces you to major periods, genres and authors in English-language literature while building practical language skills and theoretical awareness. Core study typically includes modules on literary history (such as Medieval, Renaissance, Romantic, Victorian and Modern/Contemporary literature), close reading and textual analysis, and critical theory. You will also study elements of linguistics and language structure, rhetoric and composition, and research methods.

• Foundations in Literature: surveys of British and American literature, poetry, drama and the novel.
• Critical and Theoretical Approaches: introductions to literary theory, cultural studies, feminist and postcolonial criticism.
• Linguistics and Language Studies: courses in syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis.
• Creative and Professional Writing: workshops in creative writing, editorial practice, copywriting and digital content creation.
• Optional specialisms: Shakespeare, children’s literature, modernism, American literature, film and media studies, digital humanities, and TESOL-related modules.
• Capstone / Dissertation: a final-year research project or extended essay that develops independent research and academic writing skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong record of secondary education with substantial work in English or related humanities subjects. Typical evidence includes school transcripts, a personal statement that shows engagement with literature and language, and one or more writing samples; applicants to creative-writing pathways may submit a portfolio of creative work. Trinity University considers a holistic application, so demonstrated interest in reading, critical thinking and communication, plus academic references, will strengthen an application. International applicants should provide recognised proof of English language proficiency if their prior education was not in English.
