What you'll study

The Schmatsor degree combines core theoretical modules with applied and project-based learning. In the early stages you study foundational topics that situate Schmatsor within its disciplinary neighbours, followed by intermediate modules on methods and specialised topics, and a final-year research project or capstone practicum.

• Foundations of Schmatsor – introduction to the basic concepts, vocabulary and schools of thought that define the field.
• History and Context – exploration of Schmatsor’s historical development, key movements, and regional variations, with attention to Mediterranean contexts.
• Research Methods and Ethics – qualitative and quantitative techniques used in Schmatsor research, data collection, critical interpretation and ethical practice.
• Applied Schmatsor Practice – studio or field-based modules that emphasise practical skills, project management and public engagement.
• Specialist Electives – options that may include heritage and preservation, digital Schmatsor, policy and administration, pedagogy, or advanced theory.
• Work Placement or Internship – opportunities to gain professional experience with cultural organisations, NGOs, public bodies or private practice.
• Final Project / Dissertation – an independent research project or applied capstone demonstrating mastery of subject knowledge and practical skills.

Structure

The programme is structured across three stages corresponding to the bachelor level: introductory (Stage 1), intermediate (Stage 2) and advanced (Stage 3). Students take a mixture of compulsory core modules and electives, and are supported by supervision for their final project. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, fieldwork and assessed coursework.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a secondary education qualification equivalent to Malta’s Matriculation Certificate with passes in relevant subjects. Typical offers will specify a combination of subject passes demonstrating competence in humanities, social sciences or related areas. Prospective students whose first language is not English may need to show an approved level of English language proficiency.

Other recognised entry routes include foundation programmes, recognised international secondary qualifications (such as A‑levels or the European Baccalaureate), and admission through mature-student procedures for applicants with relevant work or life experience.
