What you'll study

Core topics typically include emergency management and incident command (ICS/NIMS principles), terrorism and counterterrorism studies, risk assessment and vulnerability analysis, intelligence and information analysis, legal and constitutional issues in public safety, ethics and community policing, fire behaviour and suppression fundamentals, hazardous materials awareness, cyber security basics as applied to critical infrastructure, and crisis communications.

Coursework emphasises practical skills: scene management, incident planning, tabletop exercises, report writing, evidence handling and use of technology such as GIS and data analytic tools for threat assessment. Most students complete field-based components such as ride-alongs, ride-outs, controlled burn observations, internships with municipal agencies or private security firms, and a capstone project or practicum that integrates operational planning with policy analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised secondary school diploma or equivalent. Admissions typically consider academic performance, a personal statement outlining interest in public safety, and letters of recommendation. For some pathways, relevant work, volunteer experience in emergency services or security, or completion of community college credits in criminal justice or fire science can strengthen an application.

Because of the professional and operational nature of training, successful candidates should be prepared to undergo background checks and meet any health or physical requirements associated with field placements; some placements may also require immunisation records or drug screening.
