What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines general education courses with progressively advanced nursing theory and practice. Early study typically covers human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology and fundamentals of nursing practice. Core nursing modules progress through adult health, maternal-child health, paediatric nursing, mental health/psychiatric nursing, community and public health nursing, and care of older adults.

Students also complete focused coursework in nursing research, leadership and management, quality and safety, and nursing informatics. Clinical learning is supported by lab-based skills practice and high-fidelity simulation, followed by supervised clinical placements in hospitals, community agencies and specialty settings. The programme includes a capstone or practicum experience and preparation for the national registered nurse licensure examination.

Pathway options emphasise different career directions: the nursing administration pathway introduces healthcare management, organisational behaviour and finance; the nursing research pathway focuses on evidence-based practice, research methods and statistics; the clinical nursing pathway deepens advanced assessment, complex care planning and specialty clinical skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised high school diploma or equivalent and have completed standard college preparatory coursework, including biology and chemistry. Typical prerequisites include anatomy and physiology, microbiology, introductory psychology and a course in statistics or research methods. Strong academic performance in these prerequisites is expected.

Admission to the clinical nursing sequence is competitive and commonly requires submission of official transcripts, a personal statement, and documentation of immunisations and health screening. Some applicants may be asked to sit a health-sciences admissions assessment and to attend an interview. For students who are already licensed RNs, advanced standing or an RN-to-BSN route is available that recognises prior clinical experience and qualifications.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to sit for RN licensure and to work across a wide range of clinical settings, including acute care hospitals, community and public health agencies, long-term care and outpatient clinics. Common early-career roles include staff nurse in medical-surgical, emergency, maternity, paediatrics or psychiatric units.

With experience or additional study, alumni move into roles in nursing administration, clinical education, case management, quality improvement, infection prevention, and healthcare informatics. Those pursuing the research pathway may work in clinical research coordination or continue to graduate study (MSN, DNP or PhD) for advanced clinical or academic careers.
