Programme overview

This three‑year programme (four years with the Foundation Year option) blends theory, simulated practice and clinical placements. On successful completion you will be eligible to register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council. UCAS codes are B720 for the standard full‑time route and B721 for the Foundation Year route.

What you'll study

The course builds skills and knowledge across pregnancy, labour, birth, the postnatal period and early weeks of life, with emphasis on person‑centred, evidence‑based maternity care. Teaching covers the physiological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual factors affecting the maternity journey, infant feeding and long‑term implications for infant development and public health. The programme also addresses organisational change, resource and policy influences, and digital health developments relevant to maternity services.

Learning is delivered through lectures, seminars, case studies, simulation (high and low fidelity), online resources, peer learning, reflection and placement blocks. Simulation facilities are equipped to PROMPT™ standards and use audio/visual debrief tools.

Entry requirements

Standard full‑time entry tariff: 112–136 UCAS points. Foundation Year entry tariff: 48–88 UCAS points. Study mode: full time. Location options include High Wycombe and Uxbridge. Intended start: September 2026. Half of the programme is delivered on clinical placement with partner NHS trusts.

• Placements currently include Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (Wexham Park and Frimley Park), Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Career prospects

Graduates qualify to register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council and are prepared for roles as practising midwives across maternity services. The course emphasises safe, compassionate care, leadership experience across trusts and skills in promoting public health, which support employment in hospital maternity units, community midwifery teams and related maternal and newborn health services.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

An NHS training grant of £5,000 is available; students should check the specific eligibility criteria. Students also gain automatic membership of the Bucks Students' Union and can join the Midwifery Society for extracurricular activities and networking.
