What you'll study

The programme combines a broad survey of literary traditions with concentrated study in language, theory and writing. Early courses build foundations in close reading, composition and research; upper-division modules let you specialise in areas such as British and American literature, world and postcolonial literatures, literary theory and criticism, linguistics and the history of the English language. Typical modules include Introduction to Literary Studies, Survey of British Literature, Survey of American Literature, Shakespeare, Modern and Contemporary Literature, Poetry and Drama workshops, Literary Theory, Sociolinguistics, Syntax and Morphology, and Research Methods in English.

Many students take a capstone or senior seminar that emphasises research and sustained critical writing. The programme also offers opportunities for practicum work: editing the student literary journal, contributing to campus publications, internships with local media and publishers, and partnerships with the university’s Writing Center.
