What you'll study

The Bachelor of Nursing is delivered across three years of full-time study (with part-time options available) and combines foundational biomedical science and health theory with progressive clinical skill development. Coursework typically covers anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nursing fundamentals, clinical assessment and decision-making, and professional and ethical practice.

Specialist subject areas include acute and complex care, mental health nursing, maternal and child health, aged care and palliative care, population and Indigenous health, and health promotion. Research methods and evidence-based practice form a core component to help students evaluate and apply current best practice.

Practical learning is a major feature of the programme. Hands-on skills are developed in simulation suites and skills laboratories before students undertake multiple supervised clinical placements across primary, community and acute care settings. Placements increase in complexity and responsibility as students progress, allowing consolidation of clinical judgement, communication, teamwork and professional practice.

Entry requirements

Entry pathways include completion of a recognised senior secondary qualification (for example Year 12) or equivalent tertiary preparation, successful completion of a relevant diploma, or admission via mature-age entry or alternative entry schemes. Selection is competitive and may take into account academic results, personal statements and other selection criteria.

All students must satisfy clinical clearance requirements prior to placement. These typically include a criminal history and working with children check (where applicable), immunisation and health screening, and current basic life support/CPR certification. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency consistent with professional registration requirements.

Graduation from this accredited programme enables graduates to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as registered nurses, subject to meeting the Board's registration requirements.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to work as registered nurses across a wide range of health settings, including public and private hospitals, community health services, aged care, mental health services, primary care and specialised clinical units. Many graduates enter graduate nurse programs to consolidate early-career clinical skills.

With further experience and postgraduate study, career pathways include clinical nurse specialist roles, nurse practitioner programs, nurse education and training, leadership and management positions, research, health policy and rural and remote practice.
