What you'll study

The programme provides a balance of performance, theory and academic study. Core work includes applied lessons (private instruction), large and small ensembles, aural skills and harmony, music history and literature, and music technology. Students pursue weekly applied study culminating in juries and recital requirements, and may choose concentrations such as performance, music education, composition, or music industry/technology. Typical modules and subjects include:

• Applied Lessons and Performance — one-to-one instruction in your principal instrument or voice, studio classes and mid-term/jury assessments.
• Ensembles — orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, chamber groups, jazz ensemble and musical theatre productions providing regular performance opportunities.
• Music Theory and Aural Skills — sequential courses in harmony, counterpoint, ear training and analysis.
• Music History and Literature — survey courses covering Western music history, 20th/21st-century music and elective topics such as popular music studies or non-Western musics.
• Conducting and Pedagogy — basic conducting, rehearsal techniques and methods for teaching music in schools or private settings (especially for music education track).
• Composition and Arranging — opportunities in composition, arranging and electroacoustic practices, often supported by music technology labs.
• Music Technology and Production — courses in recording, digital audio workstations, MIDI, and multimedia for students interested in industry or media work.
• Theatre-related study — elective options in musical theatre, stagecraft, script analysis and collaborative performance projects for students engaged with both music and theatre.
• Capstone/Recital — senior recitals or capstone projects that demonstrate cumulative practical and academic learning.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a high-school diploma or equivalent with a solid academic record. Admission normally requires an audition on primary instrument or voice, demonstrating technical and musical proficiency; audition formats may include prepared pieces, sight-reading and interview. Some pathways (for example, music education) also expect evidence of ensemble experience and may request recommendation letters. International applicants must meet the university's English language requirements and provide certified transcripts. Placement in theory or applied lessons can be determined by entrance examinations.
