What you'll study

This conjoint degree pairs social-science and humanities perspectives on global change with scientific and population-based approaches to health. You will study core topics from both programmes and build an integrated pathway that reflects your interests.

• Global Studies components: globalisation, development and inequality, international political economy, human rights, migration, global governance, regional studies, language study, and qualitative and quantitative social research methods.
• Health Sciences components: human anatomy and physiology, cell and molecular biology relevant to health, public and population health, epidemiology, health promotion, health systems and policy, research methods for health, and ethics in health care.
• Structure: The conjoint is typically completed full‑time over multiple years (commonly four years), with students taking a combination of compulsory core papers and electives from each programme. Early years emphasise foundational science and social theory, with later years allowing specialised options and a research or practicum component.
• Skills developed: interdisciplinary research and critical analysis, quantitative and qualitative data handling, policy analysis, cross-cultural communication, health literacy, and project design and evaluation.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet the University of Auckland's general undergraduate entry standards (University Entrance or recognised equivalent). Admission to the conjoint programme typically requires academic strength across relevant subjects.

• Domestic applicants generally present senior secondary qualifications; strong achievement in biology or another science and in English is advantageous.
• International applicants should hold an appropriate secondary‑school completion certificate or equivalent and meet the university's English language requirements.
• Admission can be competitive and selection decisions take account of overall academic record and the suitability of the applicant for a combined social‑science and health sciences pathway. For some health‑related subjects, prior study in biology, chemistry or mathematics is recommended.

Graduates are equipped for careers that straddle health and global affairs. The degree prepares you for roles in public health, health policy and planning, international development, non‑governmental organisations, health promotion, community health services and health research.

• Possible job titles: public health analyst, health promotion officer, policy advisor, programme manager for NGOs, research assistant in health or social science, migrant and refugee health coordinator.
