What you'll study

The Public Administration programme provides a foundation in the theory and practice of public service, emphasising ethical leadership, evidence-based decision making and community engagement. Students complete core coursework in public administration and public policy alongside Doane’s general education requirements and may choose elective pathways in nonprofit management, urban and regional planning, or public finance.

• Experiential learning: practicum or internship with a government agency or nonprofit organisation, applied capstone project or senior seminar focused on a real-world administrative challenge.

Classes are typically small and seminar-style, with an emphasis on case studies, group projects and field experience. Students are encouraged to pursue internships in municipal or county administrations, regional planning bodies, state government offices and local nonprofits, and to combine study with minors or electives in related areas such as economics, criminal justice or environmental studies.

Entry requirements

Admission to the bachelor’s programme normally requires a completed secondary school qualification or equivalent. Applicants are assessed on academic records, a personal statement outlining interest in public service, and letters of recommendation or teacher references. Relevant extracurricular experience—such as community volunteering, student government or civic engagement—is viewed favourably.

Applicants transferring from other post-secondary institutions should provide transcripts of prior college work and a brief statement of goals; transfer credit is considered in line with Doane’s transfer policies. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through recognised tests or approved institutional pathways where required. Mature or non-traditional applicants with professional experience in the public or nonprofit sector are encouraged to apply and may be considered on the basis of their experience as well as academic credentials.

Graduates of the Public Administration programme pursue roles across government, nonprofits and community organisations. Typical job titles include programme coordinator, policy analyst, municipal or county administrator staff, budget or finance assistant, community outreach manager and grant specialist. The degree also provides preparation for careers in public safety administration, urban and regional planning support roles, and human services administration.
