What you'll study

The programme builds a core of advanced nursing knowledge and research skills before you specialise in one of three pathways: Nursing Administration, Nursing Research or Clinical Nursing. Core coursework typically covers advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, healthcare policy and ethics, epidemiology and biostatistics, and principles of nursing research and evidence-based practice.

In the Nursing Administration concentration you study modules in organisational leadership, healthcare finance and quality improvement, human resource management in healthcare, strategic planning and systems-level change. For Nursing Research, coursework emphasises research design, quantitative and qualitative methods, data analysis, grant writing and the development of an independent research project or thesis. The Clinical Nursing track focuses on advanced clinical decision-making, specialty practicum experiences, case management and advanced therapeutic interventions relevant to the clinical specialty.

The programme combines taught modules with applied practice. Clinical and practicum components vary by pathway: the Clinical Nursing concentration requires supervised clinical hours in relevant settings, the Research pathway culminates in a capstone research project or thesis, and the Administration track includes practicum or internship placements with health services to develop leadership competencies.

Entry requirements

• Current, unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the relevant jurisdiction.
• A recognised bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution. Applicants with equivalent qualifications or substantial professional experience should contact the School of Nursing to discuss eligibility and possible bridge options.
• A competitive undergraduate GPA; many successful applicants hold a GPA around or above a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Submission of official transcripts, a current curriculum vitae or résumé, and a personal statement outlining professional goals and reasons for pursuing graduate study.
• References — typically at least two professional references who can comment on clinical practice, leadership potential or academic ability.
• Some concentrations require evidence of recent clinical practice hours; specific practicum prerequisites or background checks and immunisation records will be required prior to placement.
• International applicants must meet English language proficiency requirements and provide credential evaluation for foreign qualifications.
