What you'll study

This programme blends progressive language coursework in German with courses in literature, culture and core areas of linguistics. Early terms focus on communicative competence: speaking, listening, reading and writing. As you advance you take intermediate and advanced German language classes, including conversation and composition, as well as seminars on German and Germanophone literature from different periods.

• Language sequence: Elementary to advanced German, conversation, composition and pronunciation workshops.
• Literature and culture: Surveys of medieval, early modern and modern German literature; studies of film, cultural history and contemporary German-speaking societies.

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need a high school diploma or equivalent with a competitive academic record. Admission decisions take into account grades, recommendations and a personal statement that demonstrates interest in languages and cultures. Prior study of German is helpful for placement into higher-level courses, but beginners may be admitted into the introductory sequence. International applicants whose first language is not English are expected to demonstrate English proficiency by standard tests or other institutional requirements.
