The programme provides a coherent progression from core physical principles to advanced topics and independent research. In the early stages you study fundamentals such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, waves and optics, thermodynamics and statistical physics, alongside essential mathematical methods and computing for physicists. Practical laboratory classes run throughout the degree to develop experimental technique, data analysis and scientific communication.
In later stages you build on that foundation with quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular physics, and more specialised modules. Typical optional or advanced topics include condensed matter physics, astrophysics and cosmology, particle and nuclear physics, quantum information and technologies, computational physics and advanced laboratory projects. The degree culminates in a substantial individual final-year project or dissertation, which is usually supervised by a member of academic staff and may be experimental, theoretical or computational in nature.
Teaching combines lectures, small-group tutorials, laboratory sessions and computer practicals. Assessment is by a mixture of examinations, coursework, laboratory reports and the final-year project report and presentation.
Admissions look for strong achievement in mathematics and physics at secondary school level, together with good performance across other subjects. Accepted qualifications include A-levels, Scottish Highers, the International Baccalaureate and relevant international equivalents. Applicants are expected to demonstrate aptitude for quantitative problem solving and laboratory work; many successful applicants have A-level/Advanced Higher in Mathematics and Physics or equivalent.
Admissions tutors consider the whole application, including predicted and achieved grades, references and personal statement. If English is not your first language, an approved English language qualification is normally required. The department also welcomes applicants with non-traditional backgrounds who can demonstrate appropriate preparation in mathematics and science.
