What you'll study

The programme provides a coherent progression from core physical principles to advanced topics and independent research. In the early stages you study fundamentals such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, waves and optics, thermodynamics and statistical physics, alongside essential mathematical methods and computing for physicists. Practical laboratory classes run throughout the degree to develop experimental technique, data analysis and scientific communication.

In later stages you build on that foundation with quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular physics, and more specialised modules. Typical optional or advanced topics include condensed matter physics, astrophysics and cosmology, particle and nuclear physics, quantum information and technologies, computational physics and advanced laboratory projects. The degree culminates in a substantial individual final-year project or dissertation, which is usually supervised by a member of academic staff and may be experimental, theoretical or computational in nature.

  • Year 1: Core principles (mechanics, electromagnetism, waves), mathematics for physics, introductory laboratory skills and computing.

Teaching and assessment
