What you'll study

The MPhil/PhD is a research degree centred on an extended original thesis, supervised by members of the Warwick Mathematics Institute and affiliated research groups. Students normally focus on a specific research topic within areas such as algebra and number theory, analysis and PDEs, geometry and topology, probability and stochastic processes, numerical analysis and scientific computing, optimisation and control, mathematical physics, and applied mathematics arising in interdisciplinary problems.

Early in the programme you will develop a research proposal and undertake a period of reading and preliminary research. You will also be able to draw on a programme of postgraduate training that includes transferable skills, research methods, and specialised topics taught as seminars or short courses. Regular activities include research seminars, reading groups, workshops and opportunities to present work internally and at external conferences. Progress is monitored through meetings with supervisors, annual reviews and, where applicable, upgrade procedures from MPhil to PhD.

• Supervision: One or more academic supervisors from the Warwick Mathematics Institute, with possible co-supervisors from related departments.
• Research training: Formal and informal training modules, seminars and workshops to support research skills and career development.
• Assessment: Research progress reports, transfer/upgrade review, and final viva voce examination of the thesis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have a strong mathematical background. Typical entry profiles include a first-class honours degree in mathematics or a closely related discipline, or a relevant master’s degree with strong performance. Candidates who hold an upper second-class degree (2:1) with substantial evidence of research aptitude, or those with equivalent international qualifications, may also be considered.

Applications normally require a detailed research proposal outlining the intended area of investigation, academic transcripts, two or more academic references, and a CV. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to interview. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English in line with the university’s postgraduate language requirements.
