What you'll study

The EdD combines taught modules with a major supervised research project (the doctoral thesis). The taught component develops advanced skills in research design and methods (both qualitative and quantitative), critical approaches to educational theory, and the translation of research into practice. Typical module themes include professional inquiry and improvement science, research methodologies and data analysis, leadership and policy in education, curriculum and assessment, and ethics in educational research.

Students normally follow a programme that begins with a core set of research and theory modules, and then moves into specialist option modules that reflect their professional and research interests. Throughout the programme, participants work on a sustained practice‑based research project supervised by academic staff, with regular progress reviews and viva voce examination on completion.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant master’s degree (normally with a merit or equivalent) and to have substantial professional experience in education or a related field. Strong applications include a concise research proposal that demonstrates a clear practice focus and feasible research questions, together with academic references and an employer reference if applicable.

The programme is aimed principally at experienced practitioners, so evidence of professional responsibility (for example senior leadership, curriculum responsibility, policy or advisory roles) is desirable. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements.

Career prospects

EdD graduates typically move into or consolidate senior roles where they lead improvement and research-informed practice. Common career destinations include senior leadership in schools and colleges, advisory and inspection roles, local or national policy and curriculum development, leadership roles in further and higher education, and positions with educational NGOs or consultancy firms.

Graduates also use the EdD to become practitioner-researchers who translate evidence into institutional change, or to move into academic research and teaching roles in higher education.
