What you'll study

This is a research-based doctorate focused on original, independent study of lifelong learning in its multiple contexts: adult and community education, workplace and professional learning, higher and further education, digital and informal learning, and policy and practice. You will work with supervisors to develop and deliver a sustained research project, drawing on relevant social science, education and interdisciplinary approaches.

Your programme includes access to doctoral training that covers advanced research methods, qualitative and quantitative techniques, ethics, and conceptual frameworks for studying lifelong learning. You will participate in research seminars, departmental and cross-faculty workshops, and may take short taught modules or transferable-skills courses offered through the university's doctoral training provision. Typical themes supervised in recent projects include learning and social justice, community development, adult literacy and numeracy, lifelong learning policy, employer-led training, digital inclusion, and comparative international perspectives.

The PhD can be undertaken full-time or part-time, with regular supervisory meetings, progress reviews and a final thesis assessed via examination. Candidates are encouraged to disseminate findings through conferences, practitioner networks and publications.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good master's degree in education, social sciences, or a related discipline, or to demonstrate equivalent professional experience and research potential. You should submit a clear research proposal outlining research questions, methodology and relevance to lifelong learning, along with academic transcripts, a CV and academic or professional references.

The selection process emphasises the quality of the research proposal and the fit with available supervisory expertise. Relevant professional experience in adult education, workplace learning, policy, community organisations or related fields is beneficial. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the university's standard English language requirements for research degrees.
