What you'll study

The MPhil/PhD in Education is a research-focused programme in which you design and carry out an original study under the guidance of an expert supervisory team. You will work on a sustained piece of empirical or theoretical research that contributes to knowledge in areas such as educational policy, curriculum studies, teacher education, comparative and international education, sociologies of education, learning and pedagogy, special educational needs, and education and technology.

Your programme combines independent research with structured research training. Typical elements include:

• Research project – development of a research question, literature review, empirical investigation or theoretical analysis, and preparation of a final thesis examined by viva voce.
• Research methods training – advanced courses and seminars in qualitative and quantitative methods, mixed methods, and contemporary methodological approaches relevant to education research.
• Schema of progression – an early probationary review to confirm registration, ongoing progress reviews, and milestones for draft chapters and conference outputs.
• Skills development – opportunities to develop academic writing, publishing, research ethics, grant writing, public engagement, and teaching practice (where relevant).
• Seminars and community – participation in departmental research seminars, interdisciplinary colloquia, and doctoral researcher networks to present work-in-progress and receive peer feedback.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant bachelor’s degree and a completed master’s degree with strong performance and a substantial research component (for example a dissertation or thesis). Candidates with equivalent professional experience and a demonstrable research track record may also be considered. Successful applicants typically provide a detailed research proposal, academic transcripts, two or more academic references, and a curriculum vitae.

All applicants must meet the university’s English language requirements for postgraduate research study. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to interview with a potential supervisory team to discuss their proposal, feasibility and fit with existing expertise.
