The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) at the University of Auckland is an undergraduate degree that provides a broad grounding in business disciplines and the option to specialise in one or more majors such as accounting, finance, marketing, management, economics or information systems. It suits students who want practical, analytical and leadership skills for careers in business, government, non-profit and entrepreneurial settings.
The BCom combines core business foundations with specialist study in one or more majors. In early years you typically cover foundational topics such as microeconomics and macroeconomics, financial and management accounting, business statistics and quantitative methods, principles of marketing, organisational behaviour, business law and introductory finance. As you progress you choose a major (or majors) and take advanced modules aligned to that discipline.
Students can combine majors, take elective papers across the university, and participate in industry projects, internships and international exchange programmes. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, case studies, group projects and assessments that emphasise applied problem-solving and data literacy.
Entry to the BCom is competitive. Domestic applicants normally require university entrance through New Zealand secondary qualifications (NCEA Level 3) with sufficient credits in approved subjects, including English and a numeracy requirement; achievement in mathematics or statistics is highly recommended for many majors. International applicants should meet equivalent secondary school qualifications such as A levels or the International Baccalaureate.
Graduates of the BCom go into a wide range of careers across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Typical roles include:
Graduates also use the BCom as a foundation for postgraduate study in professional accounting, finance, management, public policy or for launching entrepreneurial ventures.
The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s largest university and offers a comprehensive business education with links to industry and professional bodies. The BCom benefits from research-informed teaching, opportunities for workplace projects and internships, and a wide range of elective and major choices. Students can access career support services, student clubs and professional networking events, and opportunities to study abroad through international exchange programmes. The central Auckland campus places students in New Zealand’s main commercial and financial hub, facilitating employer engagement and practical experience.
