What you'll study

The MTESOL combines theoretical foundations in applied linguistics and second language acquisition with applied classroom methodology and supervised teaching practice. You will study core topics such as language learning theory, English grammar for teachers, syllabus and materials design, assessment and testing, classroom interaction and discourse, and research methods for language education. The programme typically includes a mixture of taught papers and a substantial research or practicum component: options commonly include a supervised teaching practicum in schools or language centres, a capstone research project, or a thesis depending on your chosen pathway.

• Second Language Acquisition and Applied Linguistics: theories of how learners acquire additional languages and their implications for teaching.
• Language Description for Teachers: core grammar, phonology and vocabulary study tailored to classroom use.
• Teaching Methodology and Classroom Practice: task-based and communicative approaches, lesson planning, classroom management and use of technology.
• Assessment and Testing: principles of formative and summative assessment, test design and validity, classroom-based assessment strategies.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised bachelor's degree with a satisfactory academic record. Candidates with an undergraduate degree in education, linguistics, languages or a related discipline and some teaching or tutoring experience will be well placed to succeed. Where applicants do not have prior teaching qualifications, relevant classroom or language teaching experience is typically required or recommended.

International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through an accepted test (such as IELTS or equivalent) unless exempt. The university may also require a curriculum vitae and a statement of purpose outlining reasons for study and professional aims. Specific admission pathways, including credit for prior study or graduate diplomas, are available and assessed on a case-by-case basis.
