What you'll study

This degree combines core social science theory with intensive training in research methods and policy analysis. You will study the design, implementation and interpretation of social research using both quantitative (statistics, econometrics, survey methods) and qualitative approaches (interviewing, ethnography, content analysis).

• Research methods and statistics: foundational and advanced courses in research design, applied statistics, data visualisation, and use of statistical software for social science.
• Qualitative methods: courses on interview techniques, focus groups, thematic analysis, and reflexive approaches to fieldwork.
• Policy analysis and evaluation: policy formulation, cost–benefit and impact evaluation, program monitoring, and evidence-informed decision-making.
• Social theory and context: modules covering social policy, welfare systems, public administration, and the social determinants of health and wellbeing.
• Applied practice: project-based units, industry placements or a policy-relevant capstone that develop professional skills in report writing, stakeholder engagement and communication of evidence.
• Electives and specialisations: options may include Indigenous policy and governance, migration and multicultural policy, environmental and regional policy, or advanced data analytics.

The degree is structured so students undertake core research and policy units across the program, together with electives from arts and social sciences. There is typically a pathway to an honours year or postgraduate research and coursework programs for students who wish to specialise further.

Entry requirements

Entry is open to applicants who have completed an appropriate secondary school qualification or equivalent tertiary study.
