What you'll study

This degree introduces core concepts in political theory, comparative politics and international relations before allowing increasing specialisation. Teaching blends lectures, seminars, case studies and skills workshops.

• Year 1 (foundations) – introductory modules covering political ideas and ideologies, the institutions and processes of domestic and comparative politics, basic international relations theory, and an introduction to qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Year 2 (breadth and methods) – intermediate modules that typically include comparative politics, international political economy, global security and conflict, human rights and development, alongside a methods module that develops research design, data analysis and argumentation skills.
• Final year (specialisation and research) – option to take advanced modules on topics such as diplomacy and foreign policy, political violence and security, European and regional politics, and environment and global governance, plus a substantial independent dissertation or final research project.
• Optional year – many students have the opportunity to take a placement year in industry, government or a charity, or to study abroad at a partner university to gain practical experience and international exposure.
• Assessment – a mix of essays, unseen and take-home exams, policy briefings, presentations, group projects and the dissertation; emphasis on written communication, critical thinking and applied policy analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need qualifications that demonstrate strong academic ability and readiness for a rigorous social science degree. Typical offers target high grades at A-level (or equivalent); the department also accepts International Baccalaureate, BTEC and other international qualifications. Mature applicants and those with vocational qualifications are considered on an individual basis.

Evidence of interest in politics/international affairs, clear written communication and analytical skills shown in personal statements or references strengthen an application. Some applicants are invited for interview or an admissions assessment as part of the selection process.
