See the degree grade →The BSc (Hons) Marketing at Lancaster University is a three-year undergraduate degree that develops practical and analytical marketing skills for careers in brand management, digital marketing, market research and consultancy. It suits students who want a balance of creative and data-driven marketing, with opportunities to apply theory through projects, live briefs and optional work or study abroad years.
This programme combines core marketing theory with practical applications across consumer behaviour, marketing strategy and digital channels. In the first year you build foundations in marketing principles, introductory economics, quantitative methods and business environments. Subsequent years deepen your knowledge with modules such as consumer behaviour, marketing research and analytics, branding, marketing communications, digital marketing and services marketing. You will study marketing strategy and planning, pricing and channel management, and have opportunities to take elective modules in international marketing, advertising, retail marketing and entrepreneurship.
Teaching typically mixes lectures, seminars, case studies, group projects and industry-facing assignments. You will develop practical skills in market research techniques, data analysis, campaign planning and the use of digital marketing tools. Many students complete a substantial final-year project or dissertation that can focus on a real company brief or an independent research question.
There are options to enrich the degree through a year in industry (professional placement) or a year abroad at a partner university, which extend the programme to four years and provide workplace or international experience.
Admission to the programme is competitive. Applicants are normally expected to demonstrate strong academic performance at A‑level (or equivalent), with a combination of high grades across three subjects. Typical offers also accept a range of international qualifications such as BTEC, the International Baccalaureate, and recognised overseas secondary-school credentials.
There is no single required subject at A‑level, but successful applicants often have studied subjects that develop numeracy, critical thinking or communication skills (for example maths, economics, business, psychology or humanities). Applicants with non‑traditional backgrounds, relevant work experience or strong personal statements are considered, and international applicants should meet the university's English language requirements.
Graduates from Lancaster's Marketing degree enter a broad range of roles across the private, public and third sectors. Common entry-level roles include marketing executive, digital marketing specialist, social media manager, market research analyst, brand assistant and sales or account management positions. With experience, alumni progress to roles such as brand manager, marketing manager, insight director, PR and communications manager, and consultancy or client-facing strategic positions.
The analytical and project-based skills developed on the course also provide a strong foundation for graduate schemes, specialist qualifications, and postgraduate study such as an MSc in Marketing, consumer analytics or an MBA for those pursuing senior management careers.
