The Master of Interaction Design at the University of Technology Sydney is a practice-led degree that develops advanced skills in designing digital products, services and systems with people at the centre. It suits designers, technologists and creative professionals who want to advance into senior UX, interaction and product design roles through studio work, research and industry collaboration.

What you'll study

This master’s programme combines studio practice, applied research and technical skills to explore human-centred interaction across digital and physical platforms. Core study areas include user experience (UX) research and evaluation, interaction design principles, prototyping and tangible interfaces, service and systems design, accessibility and inclusive design, design ethics, and data-informed design. Students typically progress through iterative studio units that emphasise brief development, user testing and portfolio-quality deliverables, and complete a major project or industry-based capstone that demonstrates end-to-end design and delivery.

  • Typical modules and subjects: Interaction design studio, UX research methods, prototyping and fabrication, interface design and visualisation, service design and systems thinking, programming for designers (basic front-end or embedded systems), inclusive and accessible design, design ethics and policy, and a major project or thesis unit.
  • Learning format: Studio classes, hands-on labs, seminars, workshops and industry-led briefs. Emphasis is placed on collaborative, multidisciplinary projects and iterative testing with users.
  • Assessment: Project portfolios, research reports, peer reviews, presentations and a final capstone or major design project that prepares students for professional practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in design, interaction design, human–computer interaction, information technology, computer science, media, psychology or a related discipline. Applicants with professional experience in design or technology but from other academic backgrounds may also be considered.

  • Academic record: A recognised Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; specific grade or GPA requirements follow UTS admissions policy.
  • Portfolio: A portfolio demonstrating creative work, problem solving and process is usually required—this can include UX case studies, prototypes, interfaces, research projects or related design work.
