What you'll study

The programme combines core theoretical foundations of medical education with applied skills in teaching, assessment and educational scholarship. Study is organised around modules that cover educational theory, curriculum design, assessment and evaluation, research methods, and leadership in healthcare education. Students complete a substantial independent project or dissertation that applies research or evaluation methods to a real educational problem.

• Core topics: principles of learning and teaching in clinical contexts; curriculum development; assessment for learning and programme evaluation; feedback and appraisal; professionalism and ethics in education.
• Research and scholarship: quantitative and qualitative research methods, critical appraisal, educational research design, and a supervised research dissertation or project.
• Practical skills: teaching practice and development, small-group facilitation, simulation-based teaching, use of educational technology and e-learning approaches.
• Optional/specialist studies: topics such as leadership and change management in education, faculty development, interprofessional education, and advanced assessment techniques depending on availability and student choice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in medicine, dentistry or a relevant health-related discipline, or to demonstrate equivalent professional experience. Candidates usually have some experience in clinical practice and involvement in teaching or supervision of learners. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements. Demonstrated commitment to medical education and a clear statement of purpose are important in the selection process.
