What you'll study

This programme provides rigorous training in micro- and macroeconomic theory, econometrics and applied policy analysis. Typical core modules cover advanced microeconomics for policy, public economics and the economics of the public sector, and applied econometric methods for programme evaluation and policy appraisal. You will also study practical topics such as cost–benefit analysis, impact evaluation, design of taxation and welfare policy, regulatory economics, and policy implementation.

Teaching combines lectures, seminars and hands-on computer classes using real policy datasets. The degree normally culminates in a substantial research dissertation on an applied policy question, supervised by an academic with expertise in the relevant field. Optional modules allow you to tailor the programme toward areas such as health economics, labour and education policy, environmental policy, or quantitative methods for public policy.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in economics, econometrics, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related social science with significant quantitative content. Typical academic preparation includes intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics and an introductory course in econometrics or statistics.

Where applicants do not have formal economics training but have strong quantitative skills and relevant professional experience, a case is considered on an individual basis; preparatory or bridging modules may be recommended. International applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through an accepted qualification at the level usually required for UK postgraduate study.

Career prospects

Graduates go on to careers analysing, designing and evaluating public policy across the public, private and third sectors. Typical roles include policy economist or analyst in central and local government, economic consultant in advisory firms, researcher in think tanks and research institutes, specialist economist in international organisations (for example in development or finance), and impact evaluation roles in NGOs and charities. The quantitative and research skills also provide a strong foundation for data analyst positions and for further study at PhD level.
