What you'll study

This MA integrates high-level practical work with reflective and research-based study in music education. You will take taught modules that typically cover advanced performance practice (individual lessons and masterclasses), contemporary pedagogy, curriculum and assessment in music education, and research methods in music.

• Advanced Performance Practice: one-to-one tuition, repertoire development, performance techniques for your principal instrument or voice, and elective specialised workshops (e.g. improvisation, historical performance).
• Music Education and Pedagogy: theories of learning, curriculum design, classroom management for music, assessment and progression, inclusive and special educational needs provision, and the use of technology in teaching.
• Applied and Community Music: leading ensembles, outreach and community music projects, partnership working with schools and local music services, and arts engagement strategies.
• Research Skills and Dissertation/Project: training in qualitative and quantitative methods, small-scale classroom or community-based projects, and a substantial dissertation or practical project that links performance and education.
• Ensemble and Professional Skills: chamber and large ensemble participation, concert programming, professional development sessions on career management, and opportunities to present work in public showcases.

The programme balances coursework, practical assessment and a final project. Many students combine a practical recital or portfolio of performances with a related written dissertation or an applied research project in an educational setting.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree (usually a 2:1 or equivalent) in music or a closely related discipline. Applicants with substantial professional experience in performance or music education may be considered on an individual basis.

• Performance evidence: applicants must submit a performance portfolio or audition recordings demonstrating advanced proficiency on their principal instrument or voice; an in-person audition may be requested.
• Academic requirements: a relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience; prior study in music education is advantageous but not always essential.
• References: two academic or professional references commenting on musical ability and potential for postgraduate study.
• English language: international applicants whose first language is not English must meet the university's English language requirements.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview (in person or online) to discuss their musical and educational interests and proposed project for the MA.

Career prospects

Graduates leave prepared for a range of careers that bridge performance and education. Common career paths include roles in schools and colleges, community and outreach music leadership, youth music and local authority music services, freelance teaching and performing, and arts administration. The programme also provides a solid foundation for further academic research (MPhil/PhD) in music education or performance studies.

Because the MA emphasises both practical excellence and pedagogical competence, alumni frequently work as ensemble directors, workshop leaders, curriculum developers, or specialist instrumental teachers.
