What you'll study

The MChem Chemistry (Green Principles) is a four-year integrated masters combining core chemical science with modules that emphasise sustainability, waste minimisation and the design of greener processes. Year one provides foundation training across physical, organic and inorganic chemistry together with practical laboratory skills and introductory mathematics for chemists. In years two and three you build depth through core topics such as physical chemistry, mechanistic organic chemistry, materials and spectroscopy while choosing optional modules focussed on sustainable synthesis, catalysis, alternative solvents, green analytical methods and computational approaches.

The final year typically includes an extended research project or dissertation conducted under academic supervision, integrating green-principles thinking into experimental design or theoretical study. Practical training is sustained throughout the degree with regular laboratory classes, safety and risk-assessment training, and opportunities for project-based teamwork. Assessment is by a mix of laboratory reports, coursework, written exams, presentations and the final research thesis.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have strong achievement in science and mathematics. Typical offers usually require high grades at A-level including Chemistry (or equivalent), or a strong International Baccalaureate diploma with Chemistry at higher level. Suitable qualifications for entry also include relevant BTEC or equivalent level 3 qualifications combined with A-level Chemistry, and recognised international school leaving certificates.

Applicants without traditional qualifications but with relevant foundation or access courses and demonstrable laboratory experience may also be considered. Universities commonly expect GCSE (or equivalent) passes in English and Mathematics. All applicants must meet the University's general admissions and English language requirements.
