The programme provides a broad foundation in the principal branches of chemistry alongside practical and transferable skills. In early stages you study core topics such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical techniques and basic laboratory practice. You also cover supporting mathematics and computing skills applied to chemical problems.
As you progress, modules typically include thermodynamics and kinetics, quantum and molecular structure, spectroscopy and structural characterisation, reaction mechanisms, coordination chemistry, and materials chemistry. Practical laboratory classes run throughout the degree, increasing in complexity and independence, and you receive training in instrumental methods (for example NMR, mass spectrometry, chromatography and X‑ray diffraction) and in data analysis.
In the final year you undertake an independent research project or extended laboratory investigation supervised by academic staff. Successful applicants normally hold strong passes in relevant science subjects; A‑level Chemistry is generally required, together with one or two other subjects such as Mathematics or Physics. Equivalent qualifications accepted include BTEC Nationals with appropriate science units, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate and recognised international qualifications. Candidates without direct qualifications may be considered through access or foundation routes where available.
Admissions also consider personal statements, references and any relevant practical experience. If English is not your first language, an approved English language qualification is required at the level specified by the university.
