What you'll study

The programme combines fundamental theory with practical laboratory work and computing. In early years you will cover core topics such as classical mechanics, electromagnetism, waves and optics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and mathematical methods for physicists. Practical laboratory classes develop experimental technique, data analysis and report writing, while introductory programming and numerical methods support modelling and simulation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have strong qualifications in Mathematics and Physics at A‑level or equivalent. Typical applicants will hold higher level passes in these subjects; equivalent international qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, or recognised vocational qualifications are also considered. Where applicants do not have Physics at A‑level, evidence of strong mathematical ability and prior learning in a science subject will be important.

Good GCSE passes in English and Mathematics are normally required. Mature applicants, those with relevant work experience or alternative qualifications, and applicants from international systems should contact the admissions team for advice on equivalency and module choice.
