What you'll study

The degree gives a broad grounding in modern molecular and cellular biology together with applied biotechnology subjects. Early modules build core knowledge in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics and microbiology alongside practical laboratory skills and data analysis. As you progress you'll study specialist topics such as recombinant DNA technology, protein expression and purification, microbial and plant biotechnology, immunotechnology, genomics and bioinformatics, and bioprocessing.

Teaching combines lectures, small‑group tutorials, laboratory practicals and computer‑based sessions. Assessment is by a mix of practical reports, written exams, project work and presentations. The programme culminates in a substantial individual research project carried out in one of the department's research groups, giving experience of experimental design, data collection and scientific communication.

Optional modules typically allow you to tailor the programme towards interests such as synthetic biology, industrial biotechnology and commercialisation, structural biology and advanced bioinformatics. There are opportunities for short industry placements, summer research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration with chemistry and engineering where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong attainment in science and quantitative subjects at secondary level. Typical successful applicants will hold high grades in relevant school qualifications; A‑level Biology is usually recommended and a second science subject (for example Chemistry or Mathematics) is strongly advised. Equivalent qualifications from other national systems and recognised international qualifications are accepted.

Selection looks for evidence of practical aptitude, problem solving and commitment to a laboratory‑based career. Where available, personal statements, references and any relevant experience (laboratory work, research projects, or industry experience) are considered. Applicants should also meet the University’s general entry requirements such as proficiency in English.
