What you'll study

This three-year BSc programme develops core knowledge of physical geography and environmental science, emphasising processes that shape landscapes, the functioning of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, and interactions between climate and the environment. Teaching mixes lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, computer labs and intensive fieldwork.

• Core topics: geomorphology (river, coastal and slope processes), hydrology and water resources, climatology and weather systems, soil science, biogeography and ecosystem processes.
• Skills training: quantitative data analysis, environmental statistics, GIS and remote sensing, environmental modelling, experimental design and laboratory techniques.
• Fieldwork: multi-day residential field courses and day trips to a range of landscapes (coastal, upland, fluvial and urban) to collect and analyse primary data and practise mapping and survey methods.
• Research project: an independent final-year dissertation or project that develops research skills in data collection, analysis and written communication under academic supervision.
• Optional modules: students can choose from topics such as environmental change and palaeoclimatology, flood and catchment management, coastal processes, polar and periglacial systems, environmental impact assessment, and applied GIS/remote sensing applications.

Entry requirements

Selection is based on academic qualifications and the applicant's personal statement and reference. The programme typically expects strong A-level or equivalent performance with evidence of numerate and scientific ability.

• A-levels / Advanced qualifications: applicants are normally expected to have science or mathematics subjects among their qualifications; geography is beneficial but not always required.
• International qualifications: applicants presenting the International Baccalaureate, European or other international credentials should demonstrate strong performance and relevant science/maths content at higher level.
• Other requirements: evidence of quantitative skills, some experience of practical or field-based work (for example through school work, volunteering or employment) is an advantage. An academic reference and a clear personal statement outlining interest in physical geography and environmental science are required.
• English language: applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University's English language requirement through an approved test or recognised qualification.
